Medicine Hat Flood 2011

I know that I'm behind the times (being without the internet will do that to you). But the big story here last week was the flooding that occurred in the low lying areas around Seven Persons Creek. I'm not sure if there was any damage done to buildings or business' because of it, but it sure got a lot of national media attention. My sister-in-law in Ontario phoned me, concerned that we were being flooded out as she had read about it online. They failed to mention that is was only the areas around Seven Persons Creek that were at any risk.

This is not the first time that we've had flooding here. The devastating affects of last year's flood are still being felt by many families in the Irvine area. Here are some unbelievable videos from that flood:

I remember the flood of the South Saskatchewan River in 1995.  We came into the Hat from the farm to see the river, and there were so many people on the bridges, waiting to see what was going to happen.  The biggest thing I saw go down the river was a full size tree, roots and all.  I found a slide show:

Hopefully the risk of flooding is past for this year, although many rural roads are closed because they have washed away or are under water, and fields are still filled with water.  Who knows when seeding will start this year.
