The Girl Effect: The Clock is Ticking

This video actually made me tear up.  Maybe because I have two daughters of my own and I know how easily life can go off the rails.  We need to have strong social programs in place for people that don't have families or friends to fall back on when bad things happen to them.

Over the Christmas holidays I read one of my sister's university social work textbooks called, "All Our Sisters: Stories of Homeless Women in Canada".  It was eye-opening and very sad, I highly recommend it. A point was made that when people discuss child poverty, which sits at 12% in Canada, the reality is that the children are poor because their mothers are poor.  Maybe instead of popular campaigns to end child poverty, we should be campaigning to end mother poverty.

On a lighter note, here's a link for all my hipster friends.  The place that young people go to retire and it's still like the 90's, Portlandia.  I can't wait to see this show!  And this is just as funny:
